The First Mass in the Philippines took place on March 31, 1521, marking the introduction of Christianity to the archipelago. Led by Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, the mass was officiated by Father Pedro de Valderrama on the island of Limasawa, with the participation of local chieftain Rajah Kolambu. This event symbolized the beginning of Spanish influence and the spread of Christianity, which remains the dominant religion in the country today. Though there was historical debate about the location, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines officially recognized Limasawa as the legitimate site. The First Mass is commemorated annually in Limasawa with religious activities and reenactments, celebrating the nation’s rich historical and spiritual heritage.
