Maundy Thursday, or Huwebes Santo, marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum and is deeply observed throughout the Philippines, a country where Catholic traditions are woven into daily life. This day commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper and His act of humility in washing His disciples’ feet — both central themes in the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, held in parishes nationwide. One of the most beloved Filipino Holy Week traditions is Visita Iglesia, where families and devotees visit seven or more churches, offering prayers and reflecting on the Stations of the Cross. The day is also marked by solemnity and silence in homes — television volumes are turned down, meat is avoided, and people take the time to pray and reflect. In rural areas, passion plays or Senakulo dramatise scenes from Christ’s life, bringing communities together in spiritual storytelling.
