he March First Movement, or Samil Movement, was a key moment in Korea’s struggle against Japanese colonial rule. On March 1, 1919, 33 Korean nationalists issued a Declaration of Independence, sparking mass peaceful protests across the country. Over two million Koreans participated, waving the national flag and demanding freedom. The Japanese government responded with brutal repression, killing and imprisoning thousands. Though it did not immediately achieve independence, the movement inspired the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government and drew international attention to Korea’s plight. Today, March 1st is commemorated as a national holiday in South Korea, symbolizing the country’s resilience and enduring fight for sovereignty.
