The People Power Revolution of February 1986 was a historic nonviolent uprising in the Philippines that ended the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and restored democracy. After two decades of oppressive rule, economic decline, and human rights abuses, public outrage peaked following the assassination of opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. In response to a fraudulent election, millions of Filipinos gathered along EDSA in Metro Manila, supported by Catholic leaders, political opposition, and military defectors. Facing tanks with prayers and unity, they forced Marcos to flee on February 25, paving the way for Corazon Aquino’s presidency. This peaceful revolution remains a global symbol of people’s power in defending democracy.
