Every June 26, the people of Batanes mark Batanes Day, the province’s founding anniversary from 1783. It is a local holiday, mostly unknown to the rest of the country, but essential to those who live there.
The day begins with a flag ceremony and short speeches. Schools often perform songs or dances. Elders attend. No loud music, no big parades. Just people gathering in the town plaza or open spaces.
Food is shared. Root crops, dried fish, and simple meals made from what is available. Some bring banana-leaf snacks.
