Every April 21, the residents of Calamba City in Laguna, Philippines, come together to celebrate Calamba City Day, also known as Araw ng Calamba. This memorable non-working holiday commemorates the city’s official conversion from a municipality to a component city on April 21, 2001, following the ratification of Republic Act No. 9024 through a plebiscite.
Calamba holds a significant place in Philippine history as the birthplace of national hero Dr. José Rizal. The city’s name is believed to have originated from the Tagalog word “kalamba,” meaning a wide-mouthed earthenware jar, which is symbolised by the iconic Calamba Claypot landmark at the City Plaza.
In addition to Calamba City Day, the city celebrates the Buhayani Festival every June 19, honouring Dr. Rizal’s legacy and promoting civic pride among residents.
As of 2025, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared April 21 a special non-working day in Calamba City to commemorate its 24th anniversary of cityhood. This annual celebration serves as a reminder of Calamba’s rich history and its ongoing journey of growth and development.
