The First of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. In the Philippines, it is observed mainly in Muslim communities, especially in Mindanao. It is a national holiday, but the observance itself is quiet and reflective.
There are no parties or fireworks. People attend prayers at mosques. Some people take the day to read the Qur’an, reflect, or spend time with their family. The day remembers the Hijrah, when the Prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina. It signals change, not through celebration, but through faith and intention.
