I had the immense privilege of playing Virbals at launch, and I am a little sad that it did not take off more.
The gameplay is incredibly addictive. It hits that perfect balance where things feel simple at first, but there is actually a lot going on once you get into it. Whether you are trying to catch new Virballs, experiment with their different abilities, or get through one more battle, there is always something pulling you back in. I kept telling myself, just one more round, and then an hour had passed.
The designs are honestly one of my favourite parts. Every Virball has its own personality, and they are all so weird and creative in the best way. They remind me a lot of the games I grew up with: colourful, playful, and a little bit goofy. The whole game has this fun and lighthearted vibe that feels like a love letter to older games without trying too hard to copy them.
There is definitely a strong nostalgia factor too. It is not over the top or in your face, but it brings back that feeling of being a kid and getting completely lost in a game. That mix of curiosity and excitement that made you want to explore every corner and try every combo just to see what would happen.
If you are into games that are full of charm, have great designs, and keep you coming back for more, Virballs is absolutely worth checking out. Remember, you probably will not want to stop once you start playing.
