I remember watching Special Unit 2 with my mom back when it first aired in the early 2000s, and it instantly became one of our weekly must-watch shows. Revisiting it now has been such a fun nostalgia trip. It brought back all those late-night laughs and creature-of-the-week thrills that made it such a quirky favourite back then. Even all these years later, it still holds up in its own wonderfully weird way.
This show is a fun mix of monster-of-the-week action, sharp banter, and that charming early 2000s vibe. It feels like a blend of The X-Files and Men in Black with a more playful tone. The concept is excellent. It’s about a secret police unit that deals with “Links,” which are all the cryptids and mythological creatures hiding in plain sight. Somehow, it manages to balance campy humour with genuinely cool sci-fi ideas.
Michael Landes absolutely carries the show as Nick O’Malley. He plays that classic sarcastic, slightly jaded cop with a soft spot underneath. It’s a perfect fit for the tone of the series. His dry delivery sells the humour. The chemistry with his partner, Kate, works well too. Their snappy, back-and-forth dialogue keeps things feeling quick and entertaining.
I love that this isn’t trying to be a deep or overly serious sci-fi drama. It knows exactly what it wants to be. Quirky, fast-paced, full of weird creatures and clever one-liners. And it totally pulls it off.
If you’re into offbeat sci-fi shows that mix action with a sense of humour and some surprisingly cool monster designs, you should definitely give Special Unit 2 a try. It’s pure throwback fun.
