The Cry of Candon, or “Ikkis ti Candon,” occurred on March 25, 1898, when Ilocano Katipuneros, led by Don Isabelo Abaya, successfully captured Candon from Spanish forces, marking a significant event in the Philippine Revolution. The uprising led to the brief establishment of the “Republica de Candon.” Abaya, a key figure in the revolution, continued his fight for independence and was eventually martyred by U.S. forces. Today, the Cry of Candon is commemorated annually, with March 25 declared a special non-working holiday in Candon, Ilocos Sur. This event highlights the courage of the Ilocanos and their role in the broader struggle for Philippine freedom.
